The widespread use of high-tech body armor has saved many lives in warzones, but at a price. Usually it’s the loss of exposed limbs. For U.S. Military doctors in Eastern Afghanistan, amputations were a frequent and somber ritual. Then one day, a dozen years into America’s longest war, they had a chance to not only save a life, but a future livlihood as well.
A thirteen-year-old Afghan boy named Habibullah caught his arms in a flour mill and they were nearly shredded from his body. An American medical team at remote combat surgical center in Zabul Province in Eastern Afghanistan used all of their collective knowledge as well as a few improvised tricks to give him a second chance.
